Atatürk International Airport (IST) is the busiest of Istanbul's two airports. It is located 23km to the west of the city centre. The second, and newer airport is Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) on the Asian side of the Bosphorus about 30km south east of Kadikoy.
There are a number of ways you can get from Istanbul's Airports to the city centre, you can go by; Taxi, Airport Transfer Services, Tram and Metro, or Airport bus

Taxi
Taxi is without doubt the fastest way to leave Istanbul Airport but not necessarily the fastest way to get to your destination. It is also not the cheapest method, but may be convenient for a family with a lot of luggage. Istanbul, is a big modern city and the traffic is very heavy at times particularly during the morning and evening rush hours. As you walk out of the main entrance of any of the terminals, there is always a long queue of taxis waiting to take you to your final destination.
There are taxis 24/7 all year long and they’ll always have change of a 20€ note (this is your right as a customer) but any bigger note than that, could cause you problems when paying, especially late at night.
The Taxi meter should be in a visible position and it should start at the beginning of the journey and stop as soon as you reach your destination, if the meter is not on you are not obliged to pay the minimum fare unless otherwise agreed before hand.
Eating, drinking and smoking are forbidden (note that smoking became illegal in any enclosed public place in Turkey, in July 2009)

Airport Transfer Services
Airport Transfer Services are a private service. It’s simply one of those “Airports to City Centre destination services” that all big airports have. You can prebook these services mostly online from internet, it costs (at the time of writing) €25 one-way from,Aturturk airport and about €60 from Sabiha Gökçen.
Tram and Metro
The Metro runs from Ataturk Airport to Istanbul city every 15-20 minutes from about 6:00 till 23:00. The Airport Railway station is only a few minutes walk from any terminal. For a map of all the Istanbul Metro and Tram line click here
You should take the Metro to Zeytinburnu and change on to the tram to reach the heart of Old city and also the beginning of New City. Each journry costs TL1.95 with an Istanbulkart - do not forget to buy one at the airport before you depart. The tram is always crowded at all times of the day, and may not be suitable if you have a lot of luggage.

Airport Bus
Havatas run modern airconditioned buses from both airports to Taxsim Square, and from Sabiha Gökçen to the ferry terminal at Kadikoy where you can catch the boat to Eminönü and take the tram to your destination.. These buses have plenty of room for all your luggage. Details of the schedules and the fares are on the Havatas website - the buses now accept the Istanbulkart.
